The latest release from Matasuna Records is the result of a transatlantic connection between the USA and Germany, whose common denominator is the love for Brazilian music. The journey started 17 years ago when the German musical duo Dubben got in touch with the late American musician Victor Meshkovsky. Almost two decades later, the Dubben interpretations of two songs that he once released with his band Made in Brasil on his own Nucleus label are now available! The second Dubben 7-inch on Matasuna features their great versions of the songs Grilos Cantam Para Anamaria and One Two-Two with a captivating vocal contribution by singer María del Rossario. The 7-inch includes an inlay with detailed liner notes by Dubben about the background of this release.

When Victor heard about Dubben’s intention to reinterpret his version of the Marcos Valle classic Grilos Cantam Para Anamaria, he immediately loved the idea. This version is raw and funky, according to the original plan, with Christina Joy’s original vocals isolated from the 1975 album. Bassist MC Scholze lifts the down-to-earth chord changes up into souljazz territories, while the typical ingredients of the Dubben sound – brass and percussion feeding tape delays and spring reverb chambers – happily groove along.

Originally a psyched-out proggy-ish Brasil track, Dubben takes Victor’s composition One Two-Two, puts it in a box and sends it to Colombia. Of course, the parcel gets stuck on its way, much to the delight of the audience. A slow Cumbia burner with 100% organic ingredients: straight bass drum, fender bass, springy guitars, a detuned Italian organ and tons of improvised percussion, performed and recorded by the band themselves. Finally, María del Rossario‘s vocal contribution, in both English and Spanish, is more than just the icing on the cake – it’s the Latin soul of the track. ¡Un dos-dos!

Victor Meshkovsky (*1938 Shanghai; 2017 San Francisco) was an entrepreneur, painter, dancer, producer/founder of Nucleus Records, and gifted drummer/percussionist who dedicated his life to the arts. While his role as drummer/percussionist for his friend, organ genius Walter Wanderley, might be not that well known, his self-produced and self-released albums with his band Made In Brasil (not to be confused with the other “Made In Brasil”) have become undisputed classics among music lovers, collectors and DJs. Thanks for the music, Victor!

Tracklist:

A Bossa 70 – Si Voce Pensa 03:06
B Bossa 70 – Birimbao 03:19

Description

Matasuna Records is thrilled to present the first-ever vinyl reissue of another musical jewel from Peru. The songs were recorded by the band “Bossa 70” and released on a 7inch EP and the self-titled album in 1970. Both are much sought-after collector’s items and impossible to find. The songs were transferred from the original master tapes and got a new mastering.

“Si Voce Pensa” on the A-side is a great cover version of the same named song by famous Brazilian musician “Roberto Carlos” from 1968. “Bossa 70” adapted the song for the dancefloor, which is driven by an uplifting rhythm and the expressive voice of the singer. Of course, the great interplay of the other musicians must not go unmentioned. A fantastic track that will heat up everywhere!

“Birimbao” on the flipside is another fantastic Brazilian cover version. The song was written in the 1960s by “Baden Powell”, one of the most important Brazilian guitarists and one of the pioneers of Bossa Nova. “Bossa 70” set their own stamp with a new instrumentation with brass, wah wah guitars, piano, flute parts and trumpet solos. The percussion section is also a brilliant backup for this one. Another winner!

Artist info

“Nilo Espinoza Vascones” or better known under his artist name “Nilo Espinosa” is without doubt a Peruvian saxophone and flute legend. After a classical musical education he entered the music scene in the early 1960s. In 1966 he founded the band “Los Hilton’s” with some of the best Peruvian musicians including the gifted piano player “Otto de Rojas”. In 1967 they recorded the first and only LP of the group, which was released in a small edition in Peru.

Their concerts were more and more influenced by Jazz and Bossa Nova, so in 1968 they changed the band’s name to “Bossa 70”. In the record label’s office Nilo met the Afro-Peruvian “Carmen Rosa Basurco”, who also loved Bossa Nova and could sing in Portuguese and English. From then on she was the main singer of the band.

“Bossa 70” recorded four songs for a 7-inch EP in an edition of only 100 copies, which was given away for promotional purposes at concerts and to friends & family. In 1970 they recorded their self-titled LP which reflected a mixture of Bossa Nova, Latin Jazz and Funk. The label pressed only 300 copies, which were sold out very quickly. This LP was the band’s only album and is a rare piece of Peruvian music history.

Tracklist:

A Dubben – Jesus Boogie 02:31
B Dubben – Cachaça 04:30

Description

Dubben is back! The highly esteemed producer duo make their debut on Matasuna Records with this superb 7inch.

With “Jesus Boogie” on the A-side, Dubben turns in a new direction and give this Brazilian gem from the 70s a nice boogie touch. The focus of their treatment is the dance floor, so that the usual dub effects are not used here. The result is an extremely danceable number that makes you scream for more!

On the B-side you’ll get “Cachaça” – a rework of an obscure 60s bossa number from Poland. The song was re-arranged and got new rhythm parts, which were flavoured with additional sounds and various effects. The extended dub part with psychedelic harmonica and delays blends seamlessly into the track. A great tune in beloved Dubben style!

Artist info

Dubben have been active since 2007 and released great music with their unmistakable style on labels like GAMM, Resense or Dejavue. Their reworks are not only appreciated by brasileiros, but are also popular all over the world.
